AWFUL! Please do not go here if you need help! Look for something better and preferably long term! This hospital made me worse with enabling me and overall having no staff who cared.

With my experience and stay i firmly believe that this was the place of my recovery. I may have been in denial but it is.

Fundamentaly a great hospital with great staff. My only gripes are that every single window is nailed shut so there is no fresh air at all. You must got to a smoking area to get fresh air. Unbelievably short sighted. There is no acces to sunlight either. The only place you can find sunlight is the garden area. Access is controlled between 2:30 - 4:30 at which point there is no sunlight in the garden area. Depressing.

It is THE dirtiest hospital I have ever seen. the floors are not washed, damp in the walls, there are large pieces of ceiling missing, black mould in the showers between the tiles and the carpets smells like old wet dag blankets ...

Don't pay attention to the nasty reviews. They are not representative. This is my experience in visiting my loved one: The building is an old historic religious centre and place of care that has been refurbished as a private hospital. The re-decor is really done well in putty and white colours with exquisite contemporary bird artwork in all the wide corridors and an etched glass piece by Durban's beloved Andrew Vester in the foyer. The furniture is contemporary. There is relatively decent coffee obtainable from the shop. The psychiatric and psychological care that my loved one has received here was phenomenal and the nursing staff was very caring and considerate. There are art therapy sessions, relaxation sessions, dance sessions and group therapy sessions - all voluntary. I have only heard good reports from others who have been patients at this hospital.

This psychiatric facility is not for people who prefer to occasionally be in the presence of other people or those who need regular interaction with people other than the staff. I am such a person and unfortunately, my particular doctor did not seem to understand that the perception of isolation led to a worsening of my symptoms, which lead to me asking to be released.

Not my experience but someone close. APPALLING Service by Bward night staff. Patient vomiting all over the shared room at 9:30pm It took the nurses an hour to arrange a cleaner to clean the room. At 10pm nurses are not giving medication. What are they doing. Surely the cleaners should be told that human secretions are a priority over cleaning toilets. Where is the hygiene. Don’t they know host of Illnesses vomit carries. And the friend is on IMMUNOSUPRESSANT which the staff should be aware of. No matron at st Joseph’s. Is there only one cleaner too ? No answer when I call. No answer when B ward directly call. Are we sleeping at Our duty stations already ?
