Established in 1982, Highway Hospice was the first in-patient unit in South Africa providing palliative care. Patients are terminally ill and suffer from incurable, advanced illness and HIV/aids. The Hospice philosophy is to treat the human being and not the illness and as such the work is multidisciplinary. Psycho-social, spiritual and physical care is provided along with alternative therapies. Not only for the patient, but families, friends and communities touched by imminent death are also cared for. Highway Hospice receives no funding from the Government, and expect no payment from patients. Reliant entirely on the kindness and generosity of the private sector, fundraising is a cornerstone of sustainability. The belief that, "Every person has a right to quality in life and dignity in death" drives this amazing organisation to remain available to those in need at the end of some amazingly brave and incredible lives. Open and actively searching for international support for a number of projects and initiatives for the people in the covered area of over 2,000 square km's. Please make contact if you can help in any small way.
