This is a very special house and garden. It no longer has a gallery but hosts various artistic or heritage events. Follow it on Instagram to get a sense of what is current there.

The people are friendly and it's so tranquil it's such a hidden gem in Joburg. I recommend people go.

This is an eccentric, off-the-beaten track art spaza shop/shack and art house with a small tea garden attached to the owner's main house. A range of recycled objects liberally incorporated into art works, form a sculpture garden into which you wander. On the roof of one small outbuilding covered evenly with round plastic objects, it looks as if a layer of giant glistening dew drops has settled there. The plastic-clad radio tower which happens to stand in the back yard, alone is worth a visit. If you liked the Owl House in New Bethesda, this is the Jozi must-see version, complete with permanent garden sculpures by a local artist. In order to clad the radio tower with recycled plastic up to a dizzying height, a crane was hired for a couple of days! The Spaza Art Gallery is located in an area of Johannesburg which is currently being revamped. Owner Andrew Lindsey has converted rooms of his house into exhibition spaces, while he lives in one of the rooms. When we visited, a delicious vegetarian meal was served with tea in the small garden. Art works and craft objects on sale are reasonably priced. Worth a visit, but check that the owner is home, his cell number is on the gate.
