A heritage site for Hindus in Johannesburg
My favourite mandir :) Such a heavenly atmosphere and in a truly humble setting. The Mandir is primarily a tribute to Shivji and Maataji (Lord Mahadev and Goddess Durga in her various forms) but respect is paid to all the Hindu deities. The aarti every morning is so peaceful and heartwarming and a must for an auspicious and joyful start to each day! The Mandir is always immaculate with the murtis (idols of Gods and Goddesses) readorned with the most lovely clothing and ornaments on a regular basis. All the major Hindu festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and the Mandir becomes a kaleidoscope of colour while the air is filled with beautiful melodies of popular Bhajans and Prathnas (worship songs and prayers) through the generous contribution of volunteers. With all members of the community being brought closer to one another on these special days, a real sense of togetherness and love is spread. On the more regular days throughout the year, there is a set weekly programme, with some different activity planned for different days of the week. In this regard, the Hanuman Chalisa recitals every Saturday morning from 7:30 are a not-to-be-missed function with multiple back-to-back renditions, each with a slightly different, refreshing tune :) It should just be noted that even though the primary building is currently being renovated with plans for a much grander, mordernised setting hopefully being brought to life in the near future, the original, smaller complex within the grounds is currently open and being used for all occasions in the interim. I urge all people, regardless of your cultural background, to pay this temple a visit and enjoy their time here as it provides the opportunity to reset body and mind and be empowered and energised with renewed faith in the grace of God
