In Africa, the Blue Crane is a bird very special to the amaXhosa (Southern Africa tribe), who call it ‘Indwe’. When a man distinguishes himself by deeds of valour, or any form of meritorious conduct, he was often decorated by the chief in the feathers of the Blue Crane. Often after many historic-epic battles, the chief would organise a ceremony called ‘ukundzabela’ – “a ceremony for the heroes,” at which feathers of the Blue Crane would be presented to the distinguished warriors in honour of their efforts.
