CapeRay is located in Cape Town, South Africa on Westlake Business Park Westlake. CapeRay is rated 5 out of 5 in the category medical devices in South Africa. CapeRay Medical (Pty) Ltd is a privately held company based in Cape Town, South Africa, that develops, manufactures and supplies medical imaging equipment for the diagnosis of breast cancer. The company was originally formed as African Medical Imaging (AMI) as a joint venture between De Beers and the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1999. It subsequently spun out from UCT in 2010 and CapeRay was launched, with a major investment by the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa. CapeRay has developed a novel imaging system known as Aceso – named after the Greek goddess of healing – that brings a dual-modality approach to breast cancer screening, combining low dose digital x-rays and automated breast ultrasound in a single system. Aceso thus provides complementary information for the early diagnosis of breast cancer, especially in women with dense breast tissue. The company has held the ISO 13485 certification since 2012 and in November 2017 was awarded the CE Mark for its Aceso system.
