Credence Institute is a South African organisation constituted of a diverse group of individuals with a shared purpose: advancing the interests of animals. Founded in 2019, the Institute grew out of frustration with the state of animal welfare as well as its surrounding advocacy. While many animal activists do important and laudable work, others use radical rhetoric and divisive tactics — activism that comes at the cost of genuine and necessary progress. At Credence, we take a pragmatic position, looking to make tiny changes to the status quo by building bridges instead of burning them. Despite Credence’s South African roots, its focus is not exclusively local. The ignoring of animal interests is a global problem, and we make use of an international network of experts to tackle it. Although we pride ourselves on being ideologically diverse, emphasis is placed on finding market-based solutions, an approach that we believe can achieve real and lasting results.
