Emerging Market Healthcare Ltd (EMC) represents the largest independent network of general practitioners, which practices predominantly in the township areas, of the country The EMC is a genuine South African empowerment story of a home grown enterprise created within the Black network of doctors and patient base of the previously disadvantaged areas of the Western Cape in the face of high barriers to entry within an administrator and hospital dominated healthcare environment. EMC was established in 2003 when the founding doctor group (DFPA) took the paradigm shift to create a healthcare contracting entity, driven by providers, to control their own healthcare information. The network management board of the organisation is the medico - political and guiding force to the EMC business. Whilst it is the board focused on medico-political issues, it serves a supporting role in many of the company policy decisions and direction. These doctors serve on several committees including peer management and provider credentialing. They augment and complement the main board. EMC is an accredited Black enterprise as defined by the Broad Based Black economic empowerment Act No. 53 of 2003.
