OIL believes that an effective preventive strategy includes identifying and equipping youth with the skills to make positive life choices within the context of peer to peer interaction. OIL was founded as an NGO in 2002 and is located in the Fish Hoek Valley. It facilitates youth development through a skills training programme known as peer education and works with both in school and out of school youth. OIL uses young people to positively influence their peers. For the past 5 years OIL has been implementing this programme in four diverse High Schools namely Ocean View High (pre-dominantly coloured community), Masiphumelele High (pre-dominantly black community), Fish Hoek High (pre-dominantly white community) and Simon's Town High (mixed race, including Indian, communities). With this unique mix of socio-economic backgrounds, OIL also helps foster cross-cultural friendships to help develop a strong sense of community. We see a generation of Africans uplifting their communities and imparting vision and purpose to future generations to do the same.
