Project 90 by 2030 (Project 90) started work at a time in South Africa when the impacts of climate change were becoming increasingly evident, with very few solution-focused initiatives in operation in the country. From the onset, our founders saw the need to tackle the climate change challenge head-on. We are change-focused organization with the overall mission to inspire and mobilize South Africa towards a sustainably developed and equitable low-carbon future. Working mainly on climate change and energy issues the five key principles of our work are people centred: leadership – we aim to create leaders whose action inspire others to be more aware about issues related to energy and climate change; practical action – we encourage and capacitate communities to take action to adapt and tackle the energy challenges they are facing; partnerships – working towards a sustainably developed and equitable low carbon future needs joint effort, we have partnered with a number of civil society organisations (CSOs), community based organisations (CBOs) and labour unions; research – research enables us to formulate good arguments and inspire action in ourselves and others; advocacy and communication – through good communication and effective advocacy we aim to promote participation and engagement of civil society in decision making processes. Over the last ten years of our existence we have undertaken numerous projects with great success, and established ourselves within the CSO sector and as facilitator between communities and local authorities. We empowered communities, youth, CSOs and CBOs, delivered well researched studies and gave impetus to the movement towards a Just Energy Transition. Over the last 10 years, Project 90 has been working with Misereor and other foundations, international funders and research institutions such as e.g. the World Resource Institute, Oxfam, the European Union and the Foundation for Human Rights.
