the best school I've ever been at, even through Covid-19
like
Not impressed As a student my opinion has changed over the years. From loving the scenery and the campus, to now wishing I made a better choice in my decisions. As a student I don't feel I have a say in how my recent exams will be proceeded. I am disappointed to be honest, not in the teachers but how the school is run. I have been with the school for nearly four years now and I am not proud of the school that I am apart of. Which makes me sad. I am generally a happy guy who wouldn't complain but things have changed. I have had personal ongoing issues that have continued, which my fellow peers can all relate to.To which these issues haven't changed, and as a student I hope the school is controlled and run on a more professional level. I wish all the best of luck for next year grade twelves and hope they have it easier than what we did, in regards of organization of finals. This is my opinion as a Hout Bay Academy candidate and it should be respected and not judged. -Theo le Ray-Cook
the academy Hout Bay is probably the best school I have ever attended, the school constantly pushes me to be the best version of myself. This school strives to constantly keep me engaged but also independent. I wish everyone could experience waking up excited to go to school like I am.
My son's life turned around completely from the day he started at the Academy. He was so much happier and developed a real passion for his studies which he is now furthering as an "A" student at UCT. Many thanks and well done Dan and your staff!
This school is the best school I have ever been to. I've never been happier and felt accepted before at a school. The school teachers make learning a lot funnier than others school The environment we are learning in helps us massively.
I am a teacher at The Hout Bay Academy. We started officially in the new campus in January 2018 with a wonderful philosophy and a group of both ambitious young staff and a number of highly experienced staff. I taught at RBHS for 2 years, SACS for 35 years, in the USA for 2 years and at the Hout Bay International School for three years. I am the History teacher for IGCSE and AS/A Levels and Geography IGCSE. This school has a huge amount of potential and for its first year we have had challenges, all of which we have overcome with considered discussion, input and consultation and I am very happy with the progress we have made and where we are headed. We expect students to learn to work a lot on their own and for most, this works very well. For some it is a challenge which they are facing with great fortitude. I am very happy teaching here and being part of a pioneering group fulfilling the philosophy designed by Dan Landi the principal. Our challenges are faced head on and dealt with in a professional manner and we are always happy to bring in people with the necessary skills to assist us when we face any challenge. I recommend The Hout Bay Academy for those who want to face a new challenge in a unique way where academic self-discipline is a requirement and where students can learn to take full responsibility for their academic performance and social actions and their futures.
I would never recommend it. The teachers are not great and often wouldn’t show up to lessons, and when they were there they would carelessly go on Facebook on their phones. I finished my Igcse’s and the amount of work that wasn’t covered during class time was enormous and they expected us to teach ourselves. Most of the students their are drop outs and there is a massive drug culture and peer pressure. They would often during school go smoke weed and some even meth, yet the principal would always turn a blind eye as if he were to expel students or bring light to the issue he would lose money and have a “bad name for the school.” Even when confronted about it, which is very concerning. I was an A student at my previous school before going to HBA and my marks dropped enormously especially in my maths which I was always top of my class for. The principal is a verbally abusive dictator. He’s a narcissist who cares more about how he and the school appears than the students well being. I really think anyone could excel far better at a well structured school than this one. It was honestly was my biggest regret moving there.
Please refer to the previous review, by "Peter Brown". There has never been a "Peter Brown" at our school. We suspect this review comes from a student who was asked to leave the Academy for several serious infringements of our Discipline codes and who has been conducting personal attacks on the Academy ever since. The opinions stated in the review are libelous and we are seeking legal redress. This review is almost word for word the same review as posted about Cedar House, another school from which they were removed.
