Durban Univeristy of Technology, ex ML Sultan Technikon, was named after Mohammed Lappa Sultan, who donated funds to establish a technical college in Durban for non whites, which was much needed at the time. A facility of this nature was not available to non whites at the time in the area. In 1946, the Minister declared the ML Sultan Technical College an approved institution for Higher Education, in terms of the Higher Education act of 1923. On August 7, 1956, the ML Sultan Technical College was officially opened. In May 1979, the status of the college was changed to that of a Technikon. In April 2002, ML Sultan merged with Technikon Natal to form the Durban Institute of Technology. They offer quality education in different areas from the traditional commerce and engineering to media studies and design. It is centrally located so accessibility via public transport is not an issue. The staff are well qualified and supportive. The campus is relatively safe, except when there are student protests (usually around exams, or enrollment stages when fees are due). Hopefully the institution grows from strength to strength, educates our youth as well as develop well rounded leaders of tomorrow, and remains a tertiary institution for ALL.
DUT campus is great and safe
