Personally, Chinese restaurants have always seemed rowdy and somewhat unorganised. Gwefey, however, has an authentic atmosphere that combines tradition with the modern minimalist vibe. Finally, Chinese restaurants in South Africa are on the same level as the rest of the world.

There are few things as magical as dim sum. Pale, delicate parcels that conceal all manner of gastronomic delights within their silky wrapping. Gwefey is a wonderful find. When we visited, the World Trade Centre was deserted, with Gwefey on the top floor like a secret paradise. It is beautifully decorated - large windows with gossamer coverings let the light in, and thousands of origami swans float above your head. They have a full bar, and a fabulous tea selection. It is also the first Asian restaurant that I have visited that offered decent coffee. We were there for their dim sum Sunday tea. You can choose between a selection of dim sum and their fusion platter. The dim sum was phenomenal - fresh, interesting, and beautifully made. Every mouthful was a delight. As their menu says, "each piece of sim sum makes up a small morsel that will 'touch the heart'". I couldn't have said it better myself. The fusion platter was a definite winner. The pie was savoury (spinach), with a buttery pastry that melted in the mouth. The orange and chocolate tart was a perfect marriage of flavours, and had a fantastic, dense texture. The apple tart and custard tart were both delicious twists on old favourite - Asian custard has quite an eggy flavour, more so than the custard I am used to, and the addition of sesame seeds to the apple tart was brilliant. We finished off our meal with some Jasmine tea, which was loose-leaf, aromatic heaven. Someone tried the green tea, which was not bitter at all, and as fragrant as the jasmine. Their coffee was great, too. Please go there. Do it for Asia. Do it for dim sum. Do it for me.

Meals are the size of a small snack. We ordered a chicken dish which was almost completely peanuts--very little chicken or vegetables, and chop sui--which didn't even come with rice. Don't bother with this place, spend your money somewhere else.

I have called the telephone no listed on their website as well as a different no listed on TripAdvisor multiple times and there is no answer! They do list an email address on their website too and guess what, that fails!! This has left a bad taste in my mouth and I will never consider this restaurant again!!
