I spent a full day touring Johannesburg and Soweto with Solly, who is a delightful, outgoing fellow who loves his city. Contrary to a great deal of hype, the places any tourist is likely to visit in the day time in Jo'burg are not only entirely safe, but it's likewise safe to bring along cameras and handbags, so long as one doesn't leave them lying open and unguarded. As a relatively veteran international traveler, however, this particular "overview" tour was frankly boring and superficial. One could glean almost as much simply reading a guide book, and Jo'burg is neither a pretty nor very compelling city. If you've visited any other prison, then Constitution Hill is repetitive. Jo'burg is heated by coal, so its winter skies are gray with pollution; consequently, viewing it from 50 floors up on the tallest tower in Africa is not particularly thrilling. The Apartheid Museum is loaded with a great deal of exhibition material, but is poorly organized, so that a visit of any less than 2-3 hours is far from satisfying, unless one simply wants to check off that you've visited the spot. And to spend an hour in Soweto is simply insufficient to appreciate or comprehend the scope and reality of the township, which houses over 4M people. In summary, I felt this tour was very superficial and was the least satisfying of all activities I experienced in 2 very full and magnificent weeks in South Africa.
