Vela was founded in 2011 to serve the international mining community with strategic advisory and consulting services. Vela is based in Johannesburg and is headed up by Schalk Maritz, a graduate chemical engineer with 25 years’ experience – including mining operations, project management and investment banking. Our commodity experience is varied and we have successfully completed assignments in gold, uranium, PGEs, coal as well as base metals. Our Philosophy: At Vela we believe that a clear grasp of inherent value, at any stage of the development process, is a pre-requisite for any mining project to advance optimally. Our consulting efforts incorporate ever-present uncertainty of project variables as well as the optionality embedded in mining projects. We utilise the outputs of the valuation process – including profitability and risk – to meaningfully position a project in terms of size and configuration. Further, consistency in the above process ensures that valuation for a specific configuration, as a proxy for choosing between alternatives, serves the dual purpose of reflecting the investment value inherent in the project.
