Umbiyozo is a youth-focused social venture uniting the traditional-song and -dance troupes of Cape Town’s black townships. Umbiyozo’s mission is to incentive youths’ participation within their communities’ troupes so as to prevent gangsterism, drug usage, teenage pregnancy, social isolation, and disempowerment. The venture began by filming a compilation DVD, the Umbiyozo DVD, for 14 independent troupes across the townships. Today, we are continuing to honor our mission through the creation an Umbiyozo Hub based in Khayelitsha, for the troupes to convene and practice at. Irrespective of what we are doing, we always aim to help troupes to help themselves, namely by aiding their fundraising practices and their market interface. We believe cultural diversity is a vehicle for open-mindedness, economic integration, and the emergence of the global citizen, and therefore of prime importance to be maintained. And, more simply, we know that a song and dance troupe is a place to belong for a youth who feels excluded.
