The City Hall is situated in the heart of many of the cultural and historical attractions of Durban. The City Hall, designed by architect Stanley Hudson, boasts a distinctly classic neo Baroque style, was completed in 1910, when the original building (subsequently converted to the main post office) had become too small to accommodate the growing Durban society and city centre. The design of the building is based on Belfast's City Hall in Northern Ireland. An impressive central dome rises to 48m, and is surrounded by 4 smaller domes. Each of the smaller domes has a statue which represents art, literature, music and commerce. It also houses Durban's Natural Science Museum, a public library, auditorium, and the Durban Art Gallery. The hall is home to the KZNPO on Thursday evenings.
