The aim of the Scholarship is to establish and generate funds to offer financial assistance to students pursuing a Master’s Degree in Medicine (M.Med) from the University of Limpopo (MEDUNSA campus). The Scholarship Fund is in honour and remembrance of Professor Mphako Charles Martin Modiba, one of South Africa’s first black liver transplant surgeons and alumni of the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, who embodied a vision and commitment to excellence. In an interview with The Star newspaper in 1990, Professor Modiba expressed his belief that medical specialists (especially black specialists) preferred to go into private practice as it was more financially lucrative. However, as a General Surgeon and the first black kidney and liver transplant specialist (who could have made a similar private sector career move for greater financial advancement), he chose to spend his academic and career life working in the public service. This was due to his passion and goal to teach and produce medical specialists, especially from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. With Professor Modiba passing in November 2010, the medical and academic fraternities lost a great leader and contributor, something expressed by both his colleagues and his past and present students at the time. So in order to honour Professor Modiba, his family decided to a scholarship fund that would plow back to the communities that he dedicated his life to: medicine and academia.
