Yes the area has degenerated due to neglect by authorities. However there is hope as we see development coming from all sides of the site. Hoping perhaps one historic house can be saved for future generations to know

I'm a resident here. It's sad how this place is now being used for residency instead of a historic facility since it holds a lot of history in it. But part of the blame for a immensely to government because the decision to settle here came from homelessness.

It is now an informal settlement with a mixture of local and foreign narionals. Drug use is rife and social crimes occur often. Not safe for tourists at all.

A historical leprosy colony, which can be a heritage site. Neglected and taken up by informal dwellers... a lost rich history. This is a leprosy colony established in the 1950s after the huge colonies in the Cape, Transkei, Natal and Northern Transvaal where closed and most of the people were send to Westford Leprosy Hospital. It is situated on a hill just above Danville in Pretoria West. It was also segregated into black and white sections, with white patients staying in modern houses, while blacks stayed in rondavels. It had shops and fields where the patients who were not incapacitated could go about their life, growing crops to generate their own income. Sports such as football where played in this area too. One of the leprosy doctors hailed from United Kingdom and he kept vast records of medication administered to the patients. With the state that the place is in now, taken up by squatters, one can only imagine where some of the records have didappeared to. I found all these by researching about my grandfather who may be one of the lepers who landed in this hospital and might have also died and burried on that hill. I am making a plea for government to restore this historical site for our children.
