Siyaleader was born out of a need to address a number of imbalances in South Africa today. Our belief is that through better communications we can enable and empower people to bring about solutions, change and much needed action. Mobile phones are prevalent throughout our country. Even people with very little disposable income have access to mobile phones and use them as a way to communicate with each other. It was for this reason that we decided to create a platform that uses this personal device to help collect and collate information, and then ensure a system to facilitate action and ensure resolution. In its simplest form, it creates a flow of information between field workers – the people on the ground – and the structures and departments whose task it is to implement this change. It creates an opportunity for field workers to share information from the community directly into the structures that can act on that information. It also facilitates communication directly back to this field worker especially in terms of resolution. It creates a loop that helps identify a problem, creates accountability around that issue and then ensures closure through feedback. We have built Siyaleader as an integrated mobile communications service delivery software system. This software can be utilised on basic, feature as well as smart phones. It is adaptable and highly dynamic. It has been designed in a way to allow for a variety of needs and environments. It therefore makes it relevant to multiple departments each with different requirements and outcomes. This makes it as relevant to interventions requiring immediate action as well as to those needing longer-term planning. It was imperative for us to develop the platform in both English and isiZulu. Our plan is to roll this out to be totally multilingual to meet not only the Province of KZN needs, but those of South Africa as well.
