When word spread that diamonds had been discovered, thousands of prospectors, armed with nothing more than picks, shovels and hope, descended on Kimberley and created the largest hand-dug excavation in the world. Kimberly is one of the most unique and authentic historical destinations in South Africa, because of the Kimberley diamond mine, which occupies a surface of 17 hectares, 463 meters wide, for a depth of 240 meters, and it used to be active since 1871 to 1914. The Big Hole in Kimberley is considered for one of the deepest cavities excavated by man with a depth of 200 m2. Next to the Big Hole is the Kimberley Mine Museum, the first ever discovery of diamond reserves in the country. One of the most interesting facts about the Big Hole in Kimberley is that after the mining operations were finally over, the Big Hole become the most visited tourist attraction in Kimberley. So proud of this amazing historic place. It is so well kept. The exhibitions has been so nicely preserved and kept up. The big hole tour itself is also really amazing. The structures are also a wow factor. The tour through the underground mine is really nice. The historic description on the boards are so well done. The diamonds are well kept and explained. My personal favorite was the historic time line, so accurate and still up to date. Brilliant, worth going. Oh and please go watch the video. Done great. The only sad thing is, the tram that is out of order. That would have also been an amazing tour

The guided tour was very informative and well presented. The guide was able to answer some questions as well. Just a pity that no outdoor eating facilities are operational anymore! And the trem is not working either! So so sad!

Not a bad historical experience for someone passing through Kimberley. Just very pricey and some of the amenities weren't working (Like the lift)

The exhibitions has been very well preserved and looked after. Although viewing the big hole itself is great, there are bounds of other things to look at. Brilliant, worth going, also has a great video explaining the history Please, they need to get the tram that is out of order working again.

Incredible experience being at the big hole! The video was not the best and didn't paint the picture of what took place, but was enjoyable walking through everything. The information seems very interesting and actually has really diamonds there in a vault. The best experience I enjoyed was walking through the town and seeing how old days was taking place. I found that interesting. Bathrooms clean and parking is limited, but was a super experience. See photos for further details of what will experience.

So breathtaking, for my first time here I remember standing just listening to the sound of the air, letting the breeze hit me, it created a surreal moment of oneness, helping me imagine and just be in my own thoughts… all this while I was breathing a beautiful aura I couldn’t even understand but definitely was enjoying. I thought about the years and years this place has been around, how the diamond rush completely changed the course of humanity, how the diamond rush became subject to numerous battles, power plays, crime and just gave Kimberly a lot change. Looking at the hole, you may wonder how humanity managed to think of ways to mine in the area, the amount of time it took them to turn this into one of the greatest mine’s we had ever seen. The water below takes a beautiful sea green color, which resembles pool waters… one would think of jumping in for a great swim session… although the plunge is terribly dangerous and a serious hazard if you ask me. The Big Hole will remain one of the greatest man-made wonders of the world, and a great find for the creation of wealth for various people back in the day.
