An organisation doing the most important work of rescuing, rehabilitating & homing a vastly misunderstood animal. An animal that most South Africans see as nothing more then an annoyance or at very worst vermin- the Vervet Monkey. This is a veiw by appointment center & is not strictly open to the public, so you do need to phone & book first. I guarantee once you have done the guided tour, done by very knowledgeable volunteers, you will be championing this sweet, interesting & important animal to everyone who asks!
Its an amazing place, living surrounded by vervet monkeys, away from the city and town, beautiful surroundings and the opportunity to experience working with beautiful monkeys. The sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates monkeys that would otherwise not survive, to see an orphan baby adopted by a troop mum and be raised in a troop not by people is wonderful. It is a low cost volunteering opportunity for all, if you want to support them from your home you can donate and help their work. I spent a year there and had the opportunity to see these babies introduced into troops. I would highly recommend their volunteer program.
Fantastic place to volunteer and help Vervet monkeys. All food Vegan. Great respect for all animal life. Over 500 monkeys kept in large enclosures enabling them to be in troops as in the wild. Orphaned baby monkeys integrated into troops using foster monkeys to give them a family unit. Injured monkeys treated and returned to own troops in the wild. Great on the job training.
Caring staff, great people and a wonderful setup for the primates to recover and young ones to grow. Worth a visit and see what great work the staff does there.
If anyone wants to experience an amazing volunteering time in South Africa then I can highly recommend the Vervet Monkey Foundation. It's a wonderful place, in the middle of nature, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You are surrounded by vervet monkeys, free living ones and the ones that are living in huge enclosures. The opportunity you get to work with the monkeys, in a big variety of tasks, is very rewarding. I've spent quite some time at the foundation, from 3 weeks to almost 3 years, and if I only could I would go back! I sure can say.. GO FOR IT!
Always the best volunteer opportunities, and the experience working with people from all over the world, has been so rewarding.
I've been and stayed here a few times. I can't recommend this place enough.
